Safety advice on recalled children's craft and toy products

Important safety information following recent national product recalls

We are sharing important safety information following recent national product recalls affecting some children's craft, hobby and toy products.

A small number of products, including some sand-based craft kits and toys, have been found to contain very low levels of asbestos. These include items such as certain Paw Patrol craft kits, sand art kits, candle-making kits and stretchy toys.

The levels found are very low. While no level of asbestos exposure is considered completely safe, the risk from these products is minimal, particularly compared with long-term exposure in industrial settings.

The key priority is to avoid ongoing exposure.

What you should do

We are advising residents to:

  • Check any sand-based craft kits, toys or hobby products you have at home
  • Stop using these items until you have checked whether they are affected
  • Compare your products with the official recall list

You can check the most up-to-date list by searching "asbestos" on the government recall website:

https://www.gov.uk/product-safety-alerts-reports-recalls?product_measure_type=recall-of-product-from-end-users

Outdoor play sand, such as sand used in sandpits and dug from the UK, is not affected and can continue to be used as normal.

If you find a product on the recall list:

  • Follow any instructions provided by the retailer or manufacturer
  • If no return or recall option is available, dispose of the product safely in your household waste

If the product is unused, keep it sealed and do not open it. If it has been used, place it in a sealed bag before disposing of it. There is no need for specialist removal, as the risk levels are very low.
