West Berkshire Council is inviting residents and businesses to share their views on plans to introduce a 20mph speed limit across a significant number of roads across Thatcham.

The consultation supports one of the Council's five priorities set out in the Council Strategy 2023-2027 which is to "build thriving communities with a strong local voice." This priority commits us to action work such working with communities and partners to make main towns and large villages safer and more accessible, including enabling 20mph limits for residential streets where there is local support.

The proposed order covers most residential and minor roads within Thatcham, excluding the A4 and several key routes which would remain at their current speed limits. Introducing a 20mph limit aims to reduce vehicle speeds, creating a safer and more pleasant environment for everyone, particularly pedestrians and cyclists. It also supports our wider goals to promote active travel and reduce road danger across West Berkshire.

Cllr Stuart Gourley, Executive Member for Environment and Highways at West Berkshire Council, said:

"We want to hear from as many residents and businesses as possible about this proposal. This is a great opportunity for the community to help shape the future of Thatcham's streets.

"Your feedback is vital in making sure our roads meet the needs of everyone helping to create safer, more inclusive neighbourhoods for people who walk, cycle, drive, and live in the area."

More information can be found on our Consultation Hub where you can let us know what you think by completing the survey by Wednesday 5 November. If you have any questions about the consultation, please contact our Traffic and Road Safety Team.
