Waste Strategy
Increasing recycling and reducing rubbish sent to landfill
In 2002, we adopted our
which sets out the long-term vision for the management of the rubbish which we all throw away. The Waste Strategy will be renewed in 2022.Since 2008, we've been working in partnership with our contractors Veolia to deliver the aims of the strategy to maximise recycling and reduce rubbish.
Since declaring a Climate Emergency in 2019, we have set ourselves additional waste reduction targets as part of our Environment Strategy and our Environment Strategy Delivery Plan. These targets include:
- Working towards significantly reducing single use plastics from our own activities
- Reusing, recycling and composting at least 60 per cent of municipal waste we handle by 2030
- Providing separate food waste collections by 2025
- Reviewing the potential to collect more plastic waste
You can find out more about waste collections on our Rubbish and Recycling webpages.
Plastic Recycling
In partnership with Veolia, we are now trialling four new recycling banks to increase the collection of plastic pots, tubs and trays.
Residents will be able to recycle a wider range of plastics in the new recycling banks, including:
- yoghurt pots
- margarine/butter tubs
- biscuit trays
- chocolate/sweet tubs
- ice cream tubs
- fruit punnets
- meat trays
- cosmetic pots
You can find out more about this additional plastic recycling on our Recycling Plastic Pots, Tubs and Trays webpage.
