Playing Pitch Strategy (PPS)
A Playing Pitch Strategy (PPS) is a local plan that assesses current and future needs for sport pitches, courts and ancillary facilities and aims to create a network of high-quality, accessible spaces for various sports. West Berkshire Council's PPS covers provision for football, rugby union, hockey, cricket, tennis, netball, and lacrosse.
To produce a detailed and evidence-based strategy on how best to supply sports pitches and courts in the district, existing facilities were audited, and usage and demand were analysed. West Berkshire Council worked with Sport England and sporting National Governing Bodies in developing the PPS, which is recommended as part of the National Planning Policy Framework and follows guidelines set out by Sport England. The strategy has been produced to align with the Local Plan, running to 2041.
A PPS serves multiple functions across sport, leisure, planning and public health. It supports not only formal club-based sport but also social, casual and informal sport, encouraging broader participation and increased physical activity. The PPS seeks to ensure that the appropriate level of pitch provision is aligned with both current and future needs.
Below are the documents that form the final strategy for West Berkshire, including the appendices, background documents and a consultation summary. This website will be updated with the delivery plan, once available, which will enable residents to view recommendations and ongoing work actioned by the steering group, through the implementation of the strategy (Stage E).
