Notice to Improve

A Notice to Improve (NTI) is a formal written warning issued to parents when a child has unauthorised absences from school. It is the first step in the legal intervention process and gives parents a chance to improve their child's attendance before a financial penalty is issued.

The NTI outlines the unauthorised absences and sets a monitoring period (usually 15 school days). During this time, no further unauthorised absences must occur.

If attendance improves, no further action is taken.

If unauthorised absence continues, a Penalty Notice may be issued.

This step ensures parents are aware of the issue and are given a fair opportunity to address it before facing a fine.
