Should my chosen childminder be registered with Ofsted?
It's important to find quality care for your child and to understand the difference between registered and unregistered childminders.
Anyone who looks after one or more children under the age of 8, to whom they are not related, on domestic premises, for reward and for more than two hours in any day, must register as a childminder.
There are some exemptions, where you may not have to register as a childminder. You can find more information about registering as a childminder on the GOV.UK website.
Registered childminders will receive an Ofsted pre-registration visit and will be inspected by Ofsted on a regular basis. This is to ensure that the care and learning provided meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and the Ofsted childcare requirements. During the robust pre-registration visit, the inspector will be checking to ensure that the childminder is capable of caring for children and meeting the requirements from day one.
A registered childminder with a 'good' or 'outstanding' Ofsted inspection outcome can receive government funding for the placement of disadvantaged 2 year olds and all 3 and 4 year olds. They can also register to receive funding before their first Ofsted inspection, following their registration visit.
