A4, Floral Way and Falmouth Way Active Travel Improvements
Scheme update
We have been undertaking highway improvement works on the A4 in close proximity to both Falmouth Way and Floral Way during the April school holidays in order to minimise disruption. The intention was that all works would be completed by the end of the school holidays, but the contractor has encountered unforeseen and previously unknown issues which means the works will now continue into next week.
Therefore, four-way temporary traffic signals will be present on all arms of the A4/Falmouth Way/Floral Way roundabout from Monday (13 April) until Wednesday (15 April) so the works could be completed. The footway on the north side of the A4 will be closed and pedestrians will need to cross the A4 (north/south) via the existing dropped crossings that are situated around the roundabout. The contractor will have operatives stationed on the A4 and Floral Way central islands to assist children and parents during the school morning and afternoon periods when children are walking/cycling to school.
The A4 road closure on Sunday 19 April between Floral Way roundabout and Harts Hill Road will go ahead as planned in order to undertake carriageway resurfacing, then from Monday 20 April the traffic signals contractor will be on site to install the new permanent signalised crossing on the A4 using localised safe working zones.
The dates and times shown may be subject to change following bad weather or anything unforeseen happening.
Information
West Berkshire Council's Term Maintenance Contractor, Volker Highways, have started footway and crossing improvements adjacent to the A4, Floral Way and Falmouth Way. Improvements include localised widening of footways and resurfacing from Archangel Way to Hurford Drive. The current central staggered crossing island on the A4 will also be removed and the carriageway resurfaced. Further works include signing and lining improvements as well as vegetation clearance throughout the area.
Footway works started in March and in order to protect both the public and the contractor, localised footway closures with a diversion will be in place which we appreciate may lead to longer journeys given the footways lead to various schools and businesses within the local area.
