Armed Forces Flag Raising RESIZED

As recognition of Armed Forces Week, and Armed Forces Day which take place this Saturday (28 June), we're flying the Armed Forces flag in celebration and unity with those who are part of the Armed Forces family.

Flying the Armed Forces Flag is a powerful gesture for West Berkshire Council, symbolising respect and gratitude for the service of military personnel and their families.

It reinforces the council's commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, strengthening civic pride and visibly unites the community in support of those who serve the nation.

West Berkshire has the highest number of ex-regular or ex-reservists living in the area compared to the rest of Berkshire, with over 4,000 people living in the district.

West Berkshire Council is proud to have received the Silver Award under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, reaffirming our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant and the vital contributions of service personnel, veterans, reservists, and their families.

Councillor Stephanie Steevenson, Armed Forces Champion said,

"We are proud to be supporting Armed Forces Week and to be awarded the Silver Award. Achieving Silver status highlights the Council's dedication to fostering a supportive workplace, with initiatives such as additional leave for reservists and the promotion of defence-friendly policies.

"This honour places West Berkshire Council among a select group of organisations across the UK that go above and beyond in supporting the Defence community and upholding its values.

"This support is deeply personal to both me, as a former officer in the Women's Royal Army Corps, and to the Council's Chairman, Tony Vickers, who served as an officer with the Royal Engineers."
