When to refer to EBSA Advisory service

When should schools refer to the EBSA Advisory Team?

Contact the EBSA Advisory Team for advice if you are unsure whether a referral is necessary, or for general advice. Icon for doc Is it EBSA checklist. [67KB]

Early intervention can prevent the difficulty becoming more entrenched.

Refer to the EBSA Advisory Team if:

  • you believe that the pupil is experiencing EBSA and have decided on the EBSA level
  • you have an understanding of the possible reasons for non-attendance
  • you have regular contact with the family
  • you have read previous EBSA advice and put appropriate support in place for the pupil
  • you would like additional advice/guidance on how to support the pupil

The EBSA triage panel members will be looking at what you as a school have already tried and put in place and would hope to see an Icon for doc EBSA Plan [794KB]  before you refer to the triage panel. It is important to evidence everything that you are trying.

Support criteria

  • Is the pupil experiencing worries/anxiety and having difficulty attending school, due to emotional reasons. Is there enough information to decide whether the non-attendance is due to EBSA and the underlying reasons for it?
  • Is the pupil experiencing difficulties at EBSA levels 2-4? Schools are expected to address EBSA level 1 difficulties for all pupils.
  • Are other teams already supporting the young person that would make working with the EBSA  Advisory Team inappropriate?
  • Have all parties completed the referral forms and agreed to work together to support the young person in school/back into school/to re-engage in education?

How to refer?

All of these forms (from school and home) should be returned directly to the EBSA Advisory Team email address: EBSA@westberks.gov.uk
