To participate as a Safe Place in West Berkshire, there are essential requirements that we need to
agree on:
General Requirements:
- Public Access: You must be open to the public and have appropriate live public liability insurance.
- Accessibility: Your premises must be accessible for individuals with disabilities.
- Staffing: Participation in the Safe Places scheme is voluntary, and each location determines its capacity to support individuals. While many Safe Places are staffed by multiple individuals, some, such as certain library branches, may have only one staff member available at a time. In these instances, the staff member is trained to assist individuals in distress and can contact emergency services or designated contacts if necessary. It's important to note that the primary goal of the Safe Places scheme is to offer immediate assistance to those in need. Whether a location is staffed by one or more individuals, all participating venues are committed to providing a safe environment and support to vulnerable community members.
Minimum Commitment:
By participating in the Safe Places Scheme, you agree to:
- Provide a Safe Environment: Ensure that your premises are a safe and supportive environment for vulnerable people.
- Emergency Contact: If a person is a victim of crime or requires medical attention, you agree to contact the appropriate emergency services immediately.
- Contact Scheme Contacts: If necessary, you will contact the person listed on the individual's Safe Places Card.
- Communication with Named Contacts: Allow the individual to speak to the person named on their Safe Places Card, if they wish.
- Supportive Waiting Area: Allow the person to stay on your premises until the named person arrives, or emergency services (police/ambulance) arrive, or until the individual feels safe to leave.
- Scheme Operator Communication: If the individual does not have their card and there is no immediate risk, contact the scheme operator on the provided number.
- Staff Training: Ensure your staff is familiar with the scheme so they know what to do when supporting a vulnerable person in need.
- Display Safe Places Window Sticker: Display the Safe Places Window Sticker clearly in your premises so it is easily visible to the public.
- Withdrawal Notification: If you wish to withdraw from the Safe Places Scheme, please notify the scheme operator promptly.
Additional Notes for West Berkshire Participants:
- Local Scheme Operator: Ensure you have the contact details of the local Safe Places Scheme operator for West Berkshire. These details should be kept on hand for easy access in case of an emergency.
- Awareness and Engagement: Engage with local community outreach programs and training offered by the West Berkshire Council to ensure your premises and staff are fully prepared to support vulnerable individuals.
