From 7 February 2022 your collection day may be changing
Like most councils in the UK, we have been managing a number of significant challenges to our waste services during the last two years, including the impacts of both the nationwide HGV driver shortage and Covid-19.
This change reorganises our collection rounds so that collection vehicles are collecting in the same geographical area on any given day, ensuring that we are better prepared to handle future challenges and can continue to provide a good quality of service to you. Prior to 7 February, on any given day, collection crews are working scattered throughout the district. This makes it harder for crews to assist one another, if required, in order to prevent collections from falling behind.
Please note that apart from the collection day revision, no other changes are being proposed at this time. It will not affect the frequency of collections or how we collect waste from households.
From Monday 24 January 2022 all households will begin receiving information about their new collection day in the post. For most households this will be in the form of a postcard, including a calendar showing your collection dates up until the end of July 2022.

Please note that as well as a change of collection day you may also have a change in collection weeks (the week we collect your black bin or recycling), so please ensure to check when your next rubbish and recycling collection dates are. Some properties will not have their collection day changed.
Residents with communal bins will receive a letter and can visit our bin day finder to see your new collection days.
Please note that all garden waste subscribers can leave out three extra open-topped bags of garden waste on your collection between 7 to 18 February 2022.
Residents who will have an extended wait between their last recycling, rubbish and garden waste collection and their first collection on the new collection day will receive an additional collection in order to manage excess rubbish and recycling. Households who will receive this one-off collection will be notified separately via a letter or can check the bin day finder .
My bin collection day is changing, so I will have an extended wait between my last recycling, rubbish and garden waste collection and my first collection on my new collection day - will you collect excess recycling /rubbish and garden waste?
The changes to the collection days come into effect from Monday 7 February 2022. So any collections on or after this date (Mon-Fri) will follow the new collection schedule.
There will be collection day changes for most residents and these will apply to your rubbish, recycling and garden/food waste collections.
From Monday 24 January 2022 all households will receive information in the post to let you know what your new collection day will be from 7 February 2022.
For most households this information will be in the form of a postcard displaying your new collection day and a calendar showing your collection dates up until the end of July 2022. Please note that as well as a change of collection day you may also have a change in collection weeks, so please ensure to check when your next rubbish and recycling collection dates are on the calendar.
Residents who share communal bins will receive a letter notifying you of a change to your collections days.

Please note that if you receive communal collections you may have been allocated different collection days for rubbish and recycling.
We are making changes to our collection days to ensure that we are better prepared to handle future challenges, including the current difficulties associated with the pandemic and ongoing nationwide HGV driver shortages. Changing your collection day will allow us to better allocate our resources and deliver a more efficient and resilient service to you.
Prior to 7 February, on any given day, collection crews are working scattered throughout the district. This makes it harder for crews to assist one another, if required, in order to prevent collections from falling behind.
E.g. if one or more crews are experiencing a day where a particularly high volume of rubbish or recycling has been put out and it will take longer to complete collections, or if a collection vehicle is stuck in traffic incident, or has suffered a breakdown and is therefore unable to collect for a period of time. These are the types of situations where having other collection vehicles close by would help to strengthen the resilience of the service.
The collection day changes mean that collection rounds can be reorganised so that collection vehicles will be collecting in the same geographical area on any given day.
E.g. in Thatcham we currently collect rubbish and recycling on either Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Going forward all of Thatcham will be collected on Wednesday.
Please note that apart from the collection day change, no other changes are being proposed at this time.
No, changes are only affecting the day we collect recycling, food, garden waste and rubbish from your bins/containers.
I have not received or have lost the postcard or letter, how do I find out if my collection day is changing?
Information is being posted to you from 24 January, therefore please allow until 4 February 2022 to receive this. You can always visit us here to check your collection day from 25 January 2022.
Residents with communal bins will receive a letter instead of a postcard.
If you do not have your own internet access, a smartphone, or friends or family members who can help you with this, you can call us on 01635 519080 where we are available to assist between 8.30am-5pm Monday to Thursday & 8.30am-4.30pm Friday.
Please note: our phone lines are very busy at this time and we would prefer to prioritise helping vulnerable residents. Residents are kindly requested to only call if they cannot find the information they require online or with help of a friend or family member.
Your assisted collections will continue as normal just on your new collection day. The crew will still collect and return your bin or containers to your collection point once they have emptied them.
Please continue to put the relevant bins/containers out at your collection point by 6am on your new collection day and take them back in as soon as possible after they have been emptied.
The collection teams can be out working until 6pm, so don't worry if your collection doesn't take place at the usual time.
If you received a letter stating that you will receive an additional Saturday collection, please put the relevant bins/containers out at your collection point by 6am on the date specified in the letter.
During the transition period to the new collection schedules there are a number of households who, due to their particular collection day and week changes, would be waiting considerably longer than others between scheduled collections. Therefore, to ease the impact on these residents, we are reducing their waiting time between collections by providing them with an additional collection of either rubbish, recycling and/or garden waste.
The letter that you receive will clearly identify when your collection will be and what will be collected.
To help facilitate these one-off additional collections, we will be using some collection vehicles from other councils, so don't worry if you see a collection vehicle from a neighbouring council collecting your rubbish, recycling or garden waste on the additional Saturday collection.
If you miss this additional collection, we will not be able to return until your next scheduled collection.
Please note that only households who have received the additional collection letter or have this showing when checking your bin day qualify for the extra collection.
Due to the high number of properties in the district it is not feasible to provide an extra collection for every property. We are therefore focusing our resources on the properties that would have experienced an excessive delay between collections during the changeover.
My bin collection day is changing, so I will have an extended wait between my last recycling, rubbish and garden waste collection and my first collection on my new collection day - will you collect excess recycling, rubbish and garden waste?
We are providing additional collections of either rubbish, recycling, and/or garden waste (subscription required) to households who would have had an excessive wait until their next collection during this change.
All identified households will receive a letter to let them know of this additional collection.
Please note: if you have received a letter about an additional recycling collection, this is for paper and cardboard, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, cans and aerosols, and clothing and textiles only. Garden and food waste bins are not scheduled for collection on this date.
We will not be collecting excess rubbish on any of your collections. Please ensure all waste fits within the black bin with the lid closed.
We will always collect excess recycling so long as it is presented sorted as requested in suitable rigid containers.
Garden Waste subscribers will not miss a collection, but there may be a slight delay in collection for some while you move onto your new collection day. All garden waste subscribers will be able to leave out three extra open-topped bags on your scheduled collection day between 7-18 February 2022.
The garden waste collection subscription service will remain a fortnightly service with the only change being your day of collection which will continue to fall on the same day as your recycling is collected.
Garden Waste subscribers will not miss a collection, but there may be a delay in collection for some while you move onto your new collection day.
All garden waste subscribers will be able to leave out three extra open-topped bags on your scheduled collection day between 7-18 February 2022.
Before you report a missed collection please check that:
- there are no issues affecting the service. You can check this here.
- it is the right day and week (black bin or recycling) for your bin to be collected
- you placed your bins out by 6am at your normal point of collection on your collection day
- your bin/containers contain the correct items. You can check what we collect here
Please note the collection crews can be out working until 6pm, so don't worry if your collection doesn't take place at its usual time.
If you answer "yes" to all four points above and:
- you haven't been left a bin hanger explaining why your recycling, food, garden waste or rubbish was not collected
- collection was due between Mon-Fri
Then please report a missed collection by calling 01635 519080 where we are available to assist between 8.30am-5pm Monday to Thursday & 8.30am-4.30pm Friday. We will come back for it by the following working day.
If you answer "no" to at least one or more of the points above, we will not come back to collect your recycling, rubbish or food and garden waste until your next scheduled collection. Alternatively, you can take your rubbish and recycling to one of our household waste recycling centres, make sure youbook an appointment before you visit.
I currently have my recycling and/or rubbish, food and garden waste collected in sacks, how will these changes affect me?
Your sack collection will continue as normal apart from the change of collection day.
No. These collections will continue as they do currently.
Please continue to present your bin at your normal collection point. If you present your bin in a different road, i.e. the road behind or to the side of your property, you can either speak to your neighbours who live on that road to see if the collection day is the same as yours, or from the 25 January 2022 you can check the bin day for that road here.
In order to assist us with the additional collections, we require more vehicles than our usual fleet. We have had to hire vehicles in from neighboring authorities and, therefore, you may notice other councils' branding on these vehicles for the Saturday collections.
If you received a letter advising that you would receive an additional collection on the 5 or 12 February 2022 but you missed the collection date, we will not be able to return.
This was a one-off additional collection to residents who would have had an excessive extended wait between collections in order to help them manage the rubbish, recycling and/or garden waste that may have built up during this time.
In order to allow us to collect the extra recycling it may get mixed together. This is due to the high number of properties that we need to collect recycling from on that one Saturday. It is only by collecting recycling mixed that we have been able to offer so many properties this additional recycling collection, therefore reducing the impact on residents as much as we can.
This recycling will be taken to a different recycling facility that will be able to sort the recycling back out again into the usual streams (cardboard and paper, glass and plastic bottles, cans and aerosols) so be assured that it will get recycled.
This is a one-off and we ask that you continue to sort your recycling into the prescribed containers.
