Environment Strategy 1 year on

Issued on: 18 July 2021.

One year ago, we approved and published our Environment Strategy that outlines the steps we intend to take with our partners to work towards our target of carbon neutrality by 2030.

Across the globe we all face the challenge in regards to climate change and the actions that we take to protect our wildlife and environment are on the increase.

Our ambitious Environment Delivery Plan, which supports the Strategy, highlights the collective effort that we, our partners and local communities have to play in responding to this challenge.

Over the last 12 months we have achieved a great deal of progress in working towards some of the targets detailed in our Environment Delivery Plan, in particular some of the highlights include:

  • Established an Environment Delivery Team
  • Completion of flood alleviation schemes protecting properties from effects of climate change
  • Feasibility study for a solar farm
  • Solar PV pilot leading to development of wider solar programme across Council's estate (council offices and schools)
  • Installation of first phases of electric vehicle charge points
  • LED replacement of street lighting and traffic lights
  • Successful wildflower verges pilot leading to full project being established
  • Set up a West Berkshire Parish Climate Forum
  • Supported residents' health and wellbeing during the pandemic through facilitating greater use of our local open spaces
  • Developed our Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP)
  • Delivered infrastructure to support active travel

Cllr Steve Ardagh-Walter, Executive Member for Environment at West Berkshire Council, said:

"Vast work has been taking place around our Environment Strategy that was published a year ago today and the dedicated Environment Department continue to work diligently to produce results in many projects across the district.

"Building on our progress to date, our Environment Delivery Plan was approved at Executive last night (Thursday 15 July). This provides a framework of actions that will set us on the path towards carbon neutrality for the district by 2030. The Delivery Plan will remain as a live document and be updated monthly to show achievements and opportunities.

"The last 12 months have proved that we all have a part to play in protecting our environment not only now but also for the future generations and delivery of the strategy can only be effective if we all work together. I look forward to continuing my work with local partners, residents and businesses to ensure that West Berkshire continues evolving to be a green district."
