West Berkshire Council has successfully secured a grant of £487,000 for decarbonisation works from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), administered by Salix.

The council's Property Services team commissioned an external consultant, Salvis, to carry out feasibility studies on reducing carbon emissions at three schools and a community building. This identified the need to replace existing heating systems with greener solutions such as air source heat pumps, solar PV, LED lighting, and building management systems.

Projects have been put forward for schools in Hermitage, Hungerford, and Thatcham Park along with Thatcham Family Hub who will receive the grant as they were identified as meeting the requirements to achieve carbon savings.  Detailed design is underway and work is expected to be carried out over the summer of 2021 with a completion date expected by the end of September 2021.

Cllr. Ross Mackinnon, Executive Member for Finance and Economic Development at West Berkshire Council said:

"This is excellent news regarding the successful bid for £487,000 for green installations, which will bring not only tangible benefits to the individual sites but is in keeping with the objectives of the council's Environment Strategy."
