Archaeology in Berkshire

West Berkshire's archaeology service aims to collaborate with local groups working towards archaeological protection and interpretation across the former county of Berkshire.

The A4 or Old Bath Road

The unitary authority of West Berkshire was created in 1998 following the abolition of Berkshire County Council, and our archaeology service for the district was started in 2000, covering just over half of the old county. In 2004 a separate organisation called Berkshire Archaeology (covering Eastern Berkshire) was set up to serve the five unitary authorities of Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell Forest, Maidenhead and Windsor, and Slough.  A map showing the coverage of the two Berkshire curatorial archaeology services can be downloaded through the link on the right.

Several archaeological organisations retain a Berkshire-wide focus in their activities. The Berkshire Archaeological Society is one of the most long-standing, and arranges lectures, tours and an annual Day School, as well as publishing newsletters and a journal.

The Berkshire Archaeology Research Group (formerly the Berkshire Field Research Group) is a voluntary group dedicated to investigating the archaeology of the county of Berkshire, and is active in many projects.

Other county organisations include the Berkshire Industrial Archaeology Group and the Berkshire Archaeological Trust.  Berkshire also falls within the Council for British Archaeology Wessex Region, and there is a regional group which organises events and activities.

Individuals who wish to take part in archaeological activities in and around West Berkshire have a variety of options available.
