Our Heritage

West Berkshire has a very rich heritage both culturally and naturally. The buildings, landscapes, habitats, collections and archives that comprise the heritage of West Berkshire include many that are nationally and regionally significant. The heritage of West Berkshire contributes to the overall quality of life of everyone in the District. It represents many of the essential characteristics of the area which contribute to the pleasures of living and working in or visiting West Berkshire.

The future of this valuable resource depends on the public understanding and appreciating the heritage and the history that lies behind it - this is critical for its long-term care and well being.

What is the West Berkshire Heritage Service?

The Heritage Service of West Berkshire Council was established to facilitate greater access - physical, intellectual and experiential - to the District's heritage by residents and visitors alike, with the aim of promoting understanding and appreciation of this unique resource. Our mission statement reads as follows:

The Heritage Service aims to work with the people of the District in caring for and interpreting their cultural heritage for the benefit of present and future generations.


The archaeology service advises on archaeological requirements in relation to development in West Berkshire
The West Berkshire archaeology service provides advice and information about the historic environment of the unitary authority of West Berkshire.

Berkshire Record Office is funded by the 6 unitary local authorities in Berkshire: Bracknell Forest Borough Council, Reading Borough Council, Slough Borough Council, West Berkshire Council, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, and Wokingham Unitary. West Berkshire Council is the authority responsible for the archive collections.
