Keeping people safe
Anyone can become aware that vulnerable adults may be at risk of abuse and need to do something about it. Local Authorities, the Health Service and the Police now work together to try and prevent abuse occurring and to stop it when it does happen.
Many people associate adult abuse with frail, older people. Older people are often vulnerable but a vulnerable adult can be anyone over the age of 18 who has a physical or learning disability or a mental health problem and who may be unable to protect themselves from abuse or harm.
Abuse is any behaviour towards a person that causes them harm, endangers their life or violates their rights. It can happen to men and women of any age.
West Berkshire Council works in partnership with the police, health services and other agencies to ensure a comprehensive framework to safeguard adults is in place.
