Did you know that at least 30% of your household bin could be composted?
Getting your compost bin started
Make sure your bin is placed in a suitable area. Ideally positioned on soil, in a well drained, slightly sunny spot - to allow worms and other helpful creatures to get in.
It is important to get a mixture of 'green' and 'brown' materials for a good compost. Greens are important for moisture and nitrogen, these include vegetable peelings, fruit waste, tea bags, plant prunings and grass cuttings. Brown materials such as, cardboard, leaves and eggshells, provide fibre and carbon.
Getting the mix right creates good healthy compost. You need to make sure you keep your greens and browns balanced. If your compost is too dry, add some greens or if it is too wet add more browns. It is also important to make sure there is enough air in your compost - adding scrunched up paper is a simple way of making air air pockets that will help keep your compost healthy.
Finished compost should be ready to use within 6-9 months. It should be a dark brown soil-like texture, rich in nutrients. Finished compost is great for improving your soil and making your garden grown more beautiful.
