Sensory Consortium Service
The Sensory Consortium Service operates as a specialist teaching and support service for children aged 0-19 years who have a hearing, visual or multi-sensory impairment. The Service works for 6 authorities which include West Berkshire, Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell, Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead. The Service aims to raise standards and achievement for all children, particularly those with sensory impairment. All teachers are additionally qualified as Teachers of the Hearing Impaired or Teachers of the Visually Impaired and have additional qualifications and skills in Multi-Sensory Impairment, Mobility, Audiology, Early Years, Complex needs and other areas of need.
Pre-requisites for referral:
- Pupil has an identified, diagnosed hearing and/or visual impairment and/or evidence of protracted history of middle ear complications
- Evidence from health colleagues is available to support the diagnosis and/or history
- Parents have been consulted and are in agreement with the referral
- In the case of a school-aged child, the school has requested the referral
When the referral is received:
- Pre-school contact is made within 24 hours and a visit made within 5 days
- School age contact is made within 5 working days
