Young People's Job Club

Every Thursday 2.30- 4.30pm at the John O' Gaunt Youth & Community Centre

Issued on 10 March 2010

West Berkshire Council's Youth Team and Connexions have teamed up to offer a weekly job club for young people under 20 who live in the Hungerford area.

Barbara Alexander, West Berkshire's Executive Councillor for Children and Young People said, "The first club was last week and was very well received. It gives young people the opportunity to focus on looking for jobs and explore training and further education options. It is also a chance to socialise and speak to others in the same situation which is very useful as people can feel isolated when they are not in work."

The project offers easy access to services that young people need and gives them a chance to highlight the services they need most. For example, this could include housing and benefits advice, counselling or advice about substance misuse.

Young people on benefits will also be able to sign on at the club so they won't need to travel to the Jobcentre in Newbury and the Connexions advisor will be on hand to help with job searches, C.V. writing and interview skills.

A  representative from The Prince’s Trust will be available to give information on other courses such as the 'TEAM' programme to develop basic skills, self confidence and get work experience. They will also be able to tap into available funding to develop their own projects and organise their own activities.

The session can be used as purely social to play pool, Wii or table tennis, use decks and sound recording technology, cook or just sit and chat with a free cup of tea or coffee.
