Local History & Heritage Enquiries

While the Museum redevelopment is in progress, the Museum is not able to respond to enquiries about the collections or local history while we prepare for refurbishment as all our efforts are on re-locating the collections and planning the redevelopment.

The following organisations can provide information about aspects of West Berkshire's heritage and history:

Newbury Library

All West Berkshire libraries have a collection of books and material about the history of their immediate area, although the main collection is held at Newbury Library.

Berkshire Record Office

BRO was established in 1948 to locate and preserve records relating to the county of Berkshire and its people, and anyone who is interested in the county's past. As well as original documents, catalogues and indexes, there is a library at the Record Office.

Berkshire Family History Society Research Centre

The Berks FHS Centre can help you - wherever your ancestors came from. There is a Research Centre Library open to all.

West Berkshire Archaeology Service

The Council's archaeology service provides advice and information about the historic environment of the unitary authority of West Berkshire. It maintains the Historic Environment Record (HER), which consists of a database linked to a computerised map, as well as a library of books, journals and unpublished reports. The HER is a public resource which can be consulted by appointment.

Wessex Film & Sound Archive

At Wessex Film and Sound Archive you can see and hear history, from late Victorian times to the present day, through moving images and sound recordings. The Archive contains over 32,000 film and sound recordings relating to central southern England, including film and tapes of local TV and radio.

Newbury Tourist Information Centre & Shaw House

Some of the books and other items previously on sale in the Museum shop are available via Shaw House (01635 279279) and the Tourist Information Centre (01635 30267). Do call ahead to see if they have what you require.

We are not currently able to provide online or postal book sales, etc while we prepare for refurbishment and all our efforts are on re-locating the collections and planning the redevelopment.
