Rights of Way
The Rights of Way Team aims to manage its rights of way network efficiently and effectively so that it can be used by local people and visitors in the enjoyment of the countryside of West Berkshire.
West Berkshire possesses a network of 1168km of public rights of way. These are routes available at all times for public use and enjoyment.
West Berkshire's rights of way network comprises the following: public footpaths, public bridleways, byways open to all traffic and restricted byways.
The Council, as highway authority, has a duty to keep this network open and in a condition suitable for public use. The Council, as surveying authority, holds the Definitive Map and Statement which records these legally-protected routes and is available for public inspection. See the section headed 'Definitive Map and Statement' below for further information. An electronic working map of known public rights of way is available by clicking the 'Digital Map Showing Rights of Way' link on the right hand side of this page (please note that this digital map does not have the same legal status as the Definitive Map and Statement).
