Food Hygiene - Scores on the Doors
The Star Rating system is a comprehensive scoring system for all food businesses in the district. It helps encourage businesses to aim for higher standards, provides information to the public about the hygiene standards in restaurants, cafes, pubs and other premises providing food, and helps the public decide where they want to eat.
In 2007, we launched the Scores on the Doors scheme for food businesses in the district.
The star rating is based on scores allocated for Food Hygiene and Safety, Structure and Confidence in Management. The results range from Excellent to Very Bad. You can use the Scores on the Doors website (see link to the right) to find food businesses near you!
The star rating scheme is based on the standards observed during the last food hygiene inspection. It reflects the conditions found on the day, but this may not be representative of long-term hygiene standards.
Due to the many food businesses we have in the district, there are some inspection reports up to 2 years old. We display the date the assessment was made to highlight this. The Food Team are working hard to revisit these premises as quickly as possible, starting with businesses assessed as 0 or 1 star.
The table below shows the scores that are used for each category and the 5 ratings that are given based on the total score.

Rule 1 No premises can achieve 2 stars or above if their confidence score is greater than 10.
Rule 2 Premises which receive any formal action (Improvement notice, prohibition, seizure)
will not be re-issued with score for 3 months.
This will be demonstrated on website as 'Award under consideration'.
AES
AES stands for 'Alternative Enforcement Strategy' and is used to monitor inherently low-risk businesses e.g. they don't handle open food.
Food Team Officers monitor businesses in this category for any changes which mean a re-assessment should be carried out.
NOT YET RATED
'Not Yet Rated' premises are businesses that are awaiting inspection.
